Exactly Conservative Integrators
Traditional numerical discretizations of conservative systems generically
yield an artificial secular drift of any nonlinear invariants. In this work we
present an explicit nontraditional algorithm that exactly conserves these
invariants. We illustrate the general method by applying it to the three-wave
truncation of the Euler equations, the Lotka--Volterra predator--prey model,
and the Kepler problem. This method is discussed in the context of symplectic
(phase space conserving) integration methods as well as nonsymplectic
conservative methods. We comment on the application of our method to general
conservative systems.Comment: 30 pages, postscript (1.3MB). Submitted to SIAM J. Sci. Comput
Summary of the electromagnetic compatibility evaluation of the proposed satellite power system
The effects of the proposed solar power satellite (SPS) operations on electronic equipment and systems by fundamental, harmonic, and intermodulation component emissions from the orbital station; and the fundamental, harmonic, and structural intermodulation emissions from the rectenna site were evaluated. The coupling and affects interactions affecting a wide spectrum of electronic equipment are considered. The primary EMC tasking areas are each discussed separately
Evolving database systems : a persistent view
Submitted to POS7 This work was supported in St Andrews by EPSRC Grant GR/J67611 "Delivering the Benefits of Persistence"Orthogonal persistence ensures that information will exist for as long as it is useful, for which it must have the ability to evolve with the growing needs of the application systems that use it. This may involve evolution of the data, meta-data, programs and applications, as well as the users' perception of what the information models. The need for evolution has been well recognised in the traditional (data processing) database community and the cost of failing to evolve can be gauged by the resources being invested in interfacing with legacy systems. Zdonik has identified new classes of application, such as scientific, financial and hypermedia, that require new approaches to evolution. These applications are characterised by their need to store large amounts of data whose structure must evolve as it is discovered by the applications that use it. This requires that the data be mapped dynamically to an evolving schema. Here, we discuss the problems of evolution in these new classes of application within an orthogonally persistent environment and outline some approaches to these problems.Postprin
Bringing remote sensing technology to the user community
The procedures and services available for educating and training potential users of remote sensing technology are discussed along with approaches for achieving an in-house capability for the analysis of remotely sensed data using numerical techniques based on pattern recognition principles. Cost estimates are provided where appropriate
Alternative land uses
One aproach to minimise the high nutrient content and associated algal pollution of the Peel-Harvey estuarine system is to reduce phosphorus losses at their source. Farmers can do this by changing land use is such a way thar phosphorus run-off fromthe catchment soils into drainage is prevented or at least reduced.
The department of Agriculture is investigating the economics of alternative uses, particularly substituting forestry with Pinus pinaster or Eucalyptus globulus (Tasmanian blue gum) for present beef and sheep enterprises. P. pinaster is used for logging and E. globulus for pulping
Discovery of the supernova remnant G351.0-5.4
Context. While searching the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) for diffuse radio
emission, we have serendipitously discovered extended radio emission close to
the Galactic plane. The radio morphology suggests the presence of a previously
unknown Galactic supernova remnant. An unclassified {\gamma}-ray source
detected by EGRET (3EG J1744-3934) is present in the same location and may stem
from the interaction between high-speed particles escaping the remnant and the
surrounding interstellar medium.
Aims. Our aim is to confirm the presence of a previously unknown supernova
remnant and to determine a possible association with the {\gamma}-ray emission
3EG J1744-3934.
Methods. We have conducted optical and radio follow-ups of the target using
the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on the Blanco telescope at Cerro Tololo
Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) and the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope
(GMRT). We then combined these data with archival radio and {\gamma}-ray
observations.
Results. While we detected the extended emission in four different radio
bands (325, 1400, 2417, and 4850 MHz), no optical counterpart has been
identified. Given its morphology and brightness, it is likely that the radio
emission is caused by an old supernova remnant no longer visible in the optical
band. Although an unclassified EGRET source is co-located with the supernova
remnant, Fermi-LAT data do not show a significant {\gamma}-ray excess that is
correlated with the radio emission. However, in the radial distribution of the
{\gamma}-ray events, a spatially extended feature is related with SNR at a
confidence level {\sigma}.
Conclusions. We classify the newly discovered extended emission in the radio
band as the old remnant of a previously unknown Galactic supernova: SNR

Differential effects of shading fruit or foliage on the development and composition of grape berries
Grape vines (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Cabernet Sauvignon) were selectively shaded with polypropylene doth to separate the effects of shading fruit from the effects of shading foliage on berry development and on the accumulation patterns of sugar, anthocyanins, malate, tartrate and potassium in the fruit. Shading the foliage led to both a delay and a decrease in berry growth. Leaf shading also affected the timing and the magnitude of sugar accumulation. Total sugar per berry was reduced more by shading than was sugar concentration because of the simultaneous effect of shading on fruit size. The rate of pre-veraison malate accumulation, the maximum malate content at veraison, and the rate of post-veraison malate loss in the berries were all highest in the fully sun-exposed vines and were progressively lower with increasing foliage shade. Tartaric acid was significantly lower in fruit from heavily shaded vines than in fruit from the more exposed treatments. Leaf shading was also significantly correlated with an increase in potassium concentration in the fruit. At harvest, juice pH was more dosely correlated with the concentrations of tartaric acid and potassium in the berries than with malate content. Grapes from heavily shaded vines had the highest pH. Anthocyanin accumulation in the fruit was affected more by duster shading than by leaf shading. Shaded fruit had significantly less anthocyanin than sun exposed fruit. These results indicate that in addition to a general delay in ripening there were also specific effects of shading on individual components of berry composition, and that the specific effects were different for leaf and duster shading
Development and testing of laser Doppler system components for wake vortex monitoring. Volume 1: Scanner development, laboratory and field testing and system modeling
A servo-controlled range/elevation scanner for the laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) was developed and tested in the field to assess its performance in detecting and monitoring aircraft trailing vortices in an airport environment. The elevation scanner provides a capability to manually point the LDV telescope at operator chosen angles from 3.2 deg. to 89.6 deg within 0.2 deg, or to automatically scan the units between operator chosen limits at operator chosen rates of 0.1 Hz to 0.5 Hz. The range scanner provides a capability to manually adjust the focal point of the system from a range of 32 meters to a range of 896 meters under operator control, or to scan between operator chosen limits and at rates from 0.1 Hz to 6.9 Hz. The scanner controls are designed to allow simulataneous range and elevation scanning so as to provide finger scan patterns, arc scan patterns, and vertical line scan patterns. The development and testing of the unit is discussed, along with a fluid dynamic model of the wake vortex developed in a laser Doppler vortex sensor simulation program
